The Cézanne exhibition at the Marmottan Museum.

1/ History of the Musée Marmottan.

Located in the elegant 16th arrondissement, the Musée Marmottan is a former hunting lodge of the Duke of Valmy, turned into a private mansion by Paul Marmottan to house his father’s exceptional collections of medieval and Renaissance art, as well as his own collections of First Empire art.
On his death in 1934, Paul bequeathed it to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, which turned it into a museum. Since then, generous donors have made it an exceptional museum thanks to the richness of its Impressionist collections. It holds the finest collection of Monet’s works in the world.

2/ The Cézanne exhibition.

This superb exhibition opened on 27 February and runs until 5 July. It places Cézanne’s works alongside the masterpieces of Italian painting, from the 16th to the 19th century, that inspired the great painter throughout his career.
Tintoretto, El Greco, Poussin (who trained in Italy), Pirandello: rare works by all these artists are brought together for the first time alongside Cézanne’s. You will admire the famous Mont Sainte-Victoire and still lifes, from the world’s greatest collections and museums.

3/ Cézanne.

Finally, a few words about Paul Cézanne himself. Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839 and died in 1906, he was one of the greatest Impressionists of his time and is regarded as the forerunner of Cubism.
Inspired by the greatest classical painters, from Poussin to Pirandello, he continued the tradition while innovating radically with geometric forms in his portraits, still lifes and landscapes.

This exhibition has everything you need for a delightful time.
