A Meat Lover’s Haven in the Heart of Paris

The Saint-Honoré Market Square district was brimming with restaurants, and among them, Café des Abattoirs stood out as a prime choice for meat enthusiasts. Managed by the renowned Rostang family, who also ran the nearby Absinthe restaurant, this establishment offered a delightful culinary experience. Located on Rue Gomboust, just 300 feet from Absinthe and a two-minute walk from the Relais Saint-Honoré, Café des Abattoirs was both conveniently situated and highly recommended for its meat-centric menu.

Charming Décor and Welcoming Atmosphere

The décor of Café des Abattoirs blended traditional and modern elements without excess. The kitchen was semi-open to the entrance and the bright dining area, which featured charming bistro tables with sanded raw wood trays and quilted leather frescoes, creating a fun yet elegant ambiance. The table settings were simple yet high-quality, featuring old silver cutlery, cloth napkins, pretty goblets, and bistro crystal glasses, all contributing to a friendly and warm atmosphere.

Delectable Menu and Excellent Value

For lunch, Café des Abattoirs offered a €22 menu that included an appetizer on a slate plate, a meat of the day with your choice of garnish, and a gourmet coffee. Alternatively, you could choose from one of the three set menus (€32, €38, or €45) which included a first course, a meat dish, and a dessert. The restaurant was known for its shared courses, particularly the magnificent beef and veal ribs. The skirt steak, served in a cast iron pan with homemade fries, was a highlight, while other options included puree, salad, match-stick potatoes, or seasoned vegetables roasted in the oven. Five homemade sauces were available to complement the meat. To finish, the crème brûlée, with its pronounced vanilla flavor and perfect texture, was an excellent choice. With a good selection of wines by the glass (ranging from €4.50 to €8), the average cost of a meal, including wine and coffee, was around €50, offering great value for money.

Although Café des Abattoirs has now closed, its legacy of exceptional meat dishes and warm atmosphere remains fondly remembered by those who had the pleasure of dining there.
