The Palais Royal is one of Paris’s most enchanting locations, an absolute must-visit during your stay. Just a 500-meter stroll from your hotel up Rue Saint-Honoré, this historic site is rich with cultural and architectural wonders.
From historic places, archways, and theaters to French gardens, old shops, historic cafés, and gastronomy, the Palais Royal offers a complete Parisian experience. It’s a place where history, art, and culture intertwine, making every visit memorable.
A Journey Through History and Theater
The Palais Royal has a storied past, beginning with its construction ordered by Richelieu in 1628. It has housed many significant figures, including Louis XIV during his childhood, and later, Philippe d’Orléans, known as Philippe Egalité during the Revolution.
This palace played a pivotal role during the French Revolution, where Camille Desmoulins famously called for revolt on July 12, 1789. Since 1871, it has hosted prestigious institutions like the Council of State and the Constitutional Council. The Palais Royal’s connection to theater is equally notable:
- Molière used the theater in the right wing in 1660, where Lully also organized the Opera.
- The Comédie-Française, established in 1799 in the opposite wing, still operates today, though it can only be visited during pre-scheduled tours in French.
- The Théâtre du Palais Royal, known for boulevard theater, remains an iconic venue.
